The first main proponent behind a mindbody approach to chronic pain was the doctor of Rehabilitation Medicine at New York University (NYU), named Dr. John E. Sarno. Sarno is famous for writing books and giving lectures that have healed tens of thousands people from years of chronic pain, sometimes in a matter of days and weeks!

 Dr Sarno based his pain treatment on observation, and helped patients link the physical tension in their bodies to emotional tension. Since his time, various studies in the fields of Rheumatology, Pain Psychology and Pain Management have proven that traumatic events or periods of chronic stress - especially trauma in childhood - significantly contribute to the likelihood of developing chronic pain (Karen P. Nicolson et. al., 2023, Crofford L.J, 2015, Arne Wyns et. al., 2023).

Since Sarno's findings, there has been additional research using neuroimaging linking real physical changes in the brain to an increased pain response, proving the now established fact that there is always brain involvement in the generation of chronic pain.  The Boulder Study that took place in 2021 also revealed that chronic pain patients who were educated on the mindbody connection and who were taught Psychological techniques for chronic pain had way more success in becoming pain free or nearly pain free compared to those who took a Placebo or Conventional Treatment (Yoni K. Ashar et al., 2022). At the end of the trial 66% of those patients who followed the mindbody approach were pain free or nearly pain free, compared to 20% randomized to placebo and 10% randomized to usual care. We teach the same techniques (and more!) in our Pain Free Comeback Program to make sure that no stone is left unturned.  

Recently, another study has shown that almost 90% of back and neck pain sufferers had neuroplastic pain - which means pain generated by neural circuits in the brain. This was in spite of 97% of sufferers having structural abnormalities, which proved to have nothing to do with their pain! (Howard Schubiner et. al, 2023).
